΄Old΄ Philharmonic Society concert
CORFU. August 11th at the Spianada kiosk.
The 'Old' Philharmonic Band performances at the kiosk in Upper Square date back to the mid-19th century, following the example of the British military bands of the era.
True to tradition, the band will once again perform this year at the Spianada kiosk on August 11th at 9 p.m., offering beautiful musical moments in the summer concert as part of the celebrations for the commemoration of the miracle of Saint Spyridon in 1716 and his contribution to the lifting of the town's siege by the Ottomans.
The theme of the programme is varied; it includes traditional operatic references, remembers the dark anniversary of 50 years since the occupation of Cyprus, honours the conclusion of the Olympic Games in Paris, and commemorates Corfiot Rena Vlachopoulou, who passed away 20 years ago. The programme concludes with music from America, reminiscent of our Philharmonic's recent participation in the March 25th parade in New York.
Additionally, the audience will enjoy a special nine-member female clarinet ensemble as well as two distinguished young soloists on the euphonium, Simone Haeger and Spiros Vradis.
The performance will be conducted by Spyros Prosoparis.
