Varkarola in Paleokastritsa

Varkarola
03 Aug 2024 / 20:06

CORFU. Sunday 4 August starting at 20:45

The Paleokastritsa Varkarola is a spectacular event that beautifully depicts Odysseus' arrival on the Island of the Phaeacians after his long journey. Struck by Poseidon's wrath, Odysseus is shipwrecked on Corfu, where he is found by Nausicaa, the daughter of King Alcinous. The Phaeacians then help him return to his homeland. Boats, floating platforms, majorettes, dancers, actors, and fireworks bring the myth to life, accompanied by the compositions of Vaggelis Papathanassiou. Musicians, dancers, majorettes, divers, philharmonic bands, fireworks, and natural beauty create a spectacular scene, with the result being impressive every year.

The first Varkarola in Paleokastritsa was held in 1997 by the then community of Lakones with president Spiros Michalas, in conjunction with the Scuba Diving Centre, the Holy Monastery of Panagia Paleokastritsa, and the participation of local boatmen and other local organisations.

This year's event will take place on Sunday, August 4, starting at 20:45.
