11th Sonic Arts Summer Academy & Festival 10-15 July 2018
CORFU. The International Sonic Arts Summer Academy (SASA) and the Sonic Arts Festival (SAF) have been organized in various forms since 2004, being the culmination of the year’s activities of the Ionian University’s Lab for Electroacoustic Music Research & Applications (ΕΡΗΜΕΕ).
Our ambition was – and still remains – to combine contemporary sonic arts with cutting edge technology, to experiment with new media and aesthetics, and to blend the academic model with the playful mood of improvisation. Hence, ‘Playfulness’ became this year’s title.
This year, the Sonic Arts Summer Academy and the Sonic Arts Festival of the Ionian University Music Department open their doors once again, celebrating the 70th anniversary of musique concrète and the 15th anniversary of the Ionian University Electroacoustic Music Lab. The event is co-organized by the Ionian Islands Regional Administration and the Ionian University. All of the Academy’s activities will be free of charge.
The Festival includes concerts, lectures, presentations and other activities which will take place at the Ionian Academy, Polytechno and the ‘Singing Cities’ project will take place in the People’s Garden.

MIZI–Rummaging the Medium
Rummaging the Medium is an improvisation-project of live electronic music. Soundscape recordings are smashed through the use of old recording and player media, while cassette tapes which have been found open a memory window in the operational use of this defunct media. Using these methods, Rummaging the Medium tries to explore the ‘sounds behind music’, the meanings of memory and conception of the acoustic environment following the invention of the phonogram, as well as the complications of the development of information media.

SINGING CITIES
THE SOUNDSCAPE WE LIVE IN
CORFU – GLASGOW – FLORENCE – CAGLIARI
The main project of the 11th Sonic Arts Summer Academy & Festival, ‘Singing Cities’, deals with issues of acoustic ecology, the importance of the sounds of everyday urban life and their use in musical creation. Soundscapes from selected locations in Corfu Old Town will be broadcast in the People’s Garden accompanied by a group of musicians. At the same time, soundscapes from other European cities will co-exist with those of Corfu, creating a hybrid sonic environment. In this way, cities turn into musical organisms and pedestrians become an audience of the sonic environment that they themselves create. Glasgow, Florence and Cagliari are the selected cities.
ΕΡΗΜΕΕ of the Department of Musical Studies collaborates with European Study Organizations as part of the ‘The Soundscapes We Live In’ (Erasmus+) Programme and connects these four European cities sonically.
Soundscapes of the three cities will be united in the People’s Garden with those of Corfu Town centre, creating a complex hybrid soundscape, while at the same time a group of musicians will play and create music with sounds from the town.
Residents and visitors to the Old Town will have the opportunity to experience and participate in this sonic unity and the co-existence of the everyday life of four different cities through sound.
