Film about Ioannis Capodistrias by Yannis Smaragdis
ATHENS. Following the legends of Theotocopoulos (El Greco), Cavafy and Kazantzakis, director Yannis Smaragdis will be making a film about the tragic first Governor of modern Greece. Part of the filming will naturally be done in Corfu.
At the Karolos Koon Art Gallery in Alimos, Athens, journalist Eleni Vallianatou met Yannis Smaragdis to talk about Corfu and Ioannis Capodistrias.
“I will open archives that have never been opened before,” said the director looking for the real Ioannis Kapodistias.
“I found sponsors from Cyprus. The subject of the film is his unrequited love for Roxanna Stourtza in Saint Petersburg, before he became Foreign Minister. The filming will take place in Corfu. I am writing the script and have already completed 100 pages.
Corfiots will be very happy to hear this, since Kapodistrias for them is not dead. He is a living person - in the summer I heard somebody referring to him as ‘Yannis’. His residence in Koukouritsa, which opened this year, still exists, as well as his office in Mouragia.”
