Sit-ins at 1st and 2nd High Schools once again – What are they demanding?

19 Oct 2021 / 19:19

CORFU. The 1st and 2nd High Schools began sit-ins today in addition to those already being held at the 1st Vocational High School, 5th High School and Argyrades Junior High, which also has high school classes.

Reasons for the sit-ins at 1st and 2nd High Schools:
1. The school excursion of the school year 2019-2020 was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The €150 that the pupils had paid in advance was not returned to them – not even after 18 months, as they were told by their schools.
2. Increase in the material to be examined after a relatively long period of distance learning.
3. Change in the minimum university entrance marks, which resulted in a higher degree of difficulty – for which the school does not provide the necessary knowledge – and in less students going to university.
4. In the 3rd grade, pupils have to choose subjects related either to humanities or to science. However, pupils were not allowed to change their choice, even if it was within the deadline set by the Ministry.
2nd High School request
The 2nd grade of the 2nd High School used to have 5 classes, but this year they became 4. Thus, the classrooms are overcrowded, something that could have been avoided if there were still 5 classes.
