CORFU. Work will continue to a lesser extent following the opening. Only small aircraft until March 8th.

Corfu Airport is reopening on Tuesday, January 30th, after a 14-day closure due to runway upgrade works.

The works were carried out as part of the completion of the second phase of the runway reconstruction project, which is expected to continue to a lesser extent after the airport has reopened, without disrupting the flight schedule. The relevant NOTAM was issued on January 22nd, effective from 30/01 until 08/03. Essentially, this means that during this period, only small aircraft will be accommodated on the runway, while from Saturday, March 9th, the entire runway will be available for use, in anticipation of the arrival of the first international flights marking the beginning of the tourist season.

Aegean Airlines has already announced that from January 30th to March 13th, it is obligated, according to the airport management's decision, to operate its flights with ATR-600 aircraft throughout the duration of the works. According to the company, "passengers with scheduled flights to and from Corfu on the above dates will receive relevant information."

Since last year

The first phase of works on the runway was completed in the winter of 2022, with improvement works continuing this winter as well, aiming to further enhance the safety level of the airport. According to Fraport Greece, the interruption of the runway's operation for specific periods of time was absolutely necessary due to the size and complexity of the project, the terrain morphology, and the surrounding environment. For this reason, only helicopter ambulance flights were conducted during the works.

These works are part of the Concession Agreement. As highlighted by Fraport Greece, this particular project will result in the ability to serve not only larger aircraft but also an increased number of flights, as, upon completion of the works, the total length of the runway will be 2,475 metres. The first arrival at airport on Tuesday, January 30th, is scheduled by Aegean at 8:30 a.m. from Athens.
