CORFU. "The two properties can be utilised for the benefit of the Municipality and its residents," stated the outgoing Mayor Meropi Ydraiou.

(Central Corfu Municipality) The British Cemetery and the Asani building have been transferred to Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Municipality following collaboration with the British Embassy and the Hellenic Public Properties company respectively.  Outgoing Mayor Meropi Ydraiou stated that the two properties can be utilised for the benefit of the Municipality and its residents.

The British Cemetery, whose long-standing unclear ownership status was investigated, was found to be the property of the Municipality. A written request for its transfer was immediately made by the Municipality to the British Embassy, and since October, the management of the Cemetery has been carried out by the Green Department of the central municipality. In addition to the Cemetery's main area, there is a large adjacent plot that serves as a green area for Corfu Town. The next actions include designating the British Cemetery as a monument and further enhancing its visibility.

As for the Asani building, a long-abandoned and dangerous structure located in the centre of the old town opposite San Giacomo Old Town Hall, after actions taken and relevant decisions of Municipal Councils, it falls under the jurisdiction of the central municipality for restoration and potential commercial exploitation.

The Hellenic Public Properties company proceeded with the lease of the property, and the Municipal Council accepted this lease for 25 years, at a cost of 1,500 Euros per year. The Municipality undertakes the restoration of the building, as well as its enhancement and commercial exploitation, with the possibility of subleasing.

Following this development, Mayor Meropi Ydraiou stated: "The British Cemetery, with its enhancement, can become another green area and open space for our fellow citizens. At the same time, we considered it our duty and initiated the necessary procedures for the rescue and restoration of the Asani building, after clarifying its ownership status.

It is a five-story building abandoned for years in a deteriorating condition but located in the heart of our town, next to the Old Town Hall. I believe that its rescue and restoration are both imperative and feasible under the conditions under which the lease was granted to our Municipality. Both of these property cases highlight the interest and care we demonstrated during our term in office, in general, for the arrangement and enhancement of municipal properties, safeguarding municipal assets."
