President completes her visit to Diapontia Islands

ERIKOUSSA. The Greek President departed at 2pm in a Chinook helicopter from Erikoussa, the last stop on her visit to the Diapontia Islands.
The Greek President and the Deputy Defence Minister Alkiviades Stefanis visited the three islands Othoni, Mathraki and Erikoussa today.
In Othoni Ms. Sakellaropoulou laid a wreath at the memorial for the members of the 'Proteus' submarine crew who heroically lost their lives. She also visited Othoni surgery where residents were being vaccinated by an EODY team.

This was followed by visits to Mathraki and Erikoussa by Coastguard vessel, where the President was able to verify the smooth operation of the vaccination programme and had the chance to talk with local residents.
In Erikoussa she visited the primary school and talked with the teacher and the school's three pupils. Deputy Defence Minister Alkiviades Stefanis also accepted the request from Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou for the repair of the children's playground, which will be paid for by the Defence Ministry.
Stefanos Gikas: A great honour
Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas said, "The visit of the Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou to the Diapontia Islands is a great honour.
The visit was doubly important as today was the second day of the Diapontia Islands vaccination programme. The state is placing great importance on this programme as it is our weapon to allow us to return to normality.
I would like to thank Corfu Hospital administration and personnel as well as 6th Health Region for the impeccable implementation of the vaccination programme.
The President's visit was also important as it underlined the importance the state places on the Diapontia Islands and their residents. This was also made clear by the presence of the Deputy Defence Minister Alkiviades Stefanis.
I would like to remind you that the ND Government has demonstrated its support for our border islands, including the Health Ministry's recent announcement of a permanent doctor for the DIapontia Islands for the first time.
Moreover, from the end of next month there will a Special Forces outpost on Othoni. In this way, the Government and the Defence Ministry are stressing the special strategic importance of the Diapontia Islands, which make up the northwestern border of the country.
Finally, as part of the support being given to small island residents, the government has decided to include the Diapontia Islands in the small islands that are exempt from paying ENFIA."
The President was accompanied on her visit by the Deputy Governor for Health Kostas Zorbas, the 6th Health District Director Yiannis Karvelis and the Director of Corfu General Hospital Leonidas Roubatis.
