CORFU. We have stressed that our goal is not to destroy the Parks, but to repair, upgrade and enhance them.

The Central Corfu Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros, following yesterday's Municipal Council meeting, in which the issue of the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks redevelopment project was raised, made the following statement:

“The contract with the contractor of the Garitsa and Anemomylos Parks redevelopment project has already been signed and the implementation works of the management study have already started. The Parks will be cleaned, new basketball courts, a playground, a skate park, a small theatre and rest areas will be created, while the sick and dangerous trees will be cut down and 153 new trees will be planted.

You all know that the Parks had been neglected for years. And I think everyone wishes to see it as it deserves to be seen - modern in terms of infrastructure and upgraded. We have stressed that our goal is not to destroy them, but to repair, upgrade and enhance them and I am sure that once the work is completed, our decision to implement this project will vindicate our fight.

And it is a fight, because a very small number of citizens is opposing the implementation of the project, as they say that parks will be concreted and destroyed. Some citizens, driven mainly by party criteria and having the upcoming elections in mind, are also trying to create a sense of dissatisfaction with the municipal authority in order to gain more votes. Other people are taking advantage of the situation, in order benefit politically as well.

All of the abovementioned people are cooperating with the aim of stopping the project and presenting the municipal authority as incompetent. It is, you see, far more profitable in terms of the elections to have no work to show for it. Ultimately, however, it is the place itself and its citizens who are paying the price in Corfu.

We are stressing that we will proceed with all our strength to complete the projects, including the Garitsa and Anemomylos redevelopment project, and we call on everyone to support this effort against all those who do not want anything to be done in this place.

To all those who are opposing to the promotion and upgrading of our cultural product, the promotion and upgrading of public areas, the completion of infrastructure projects and to everything good that happens for our island, we are calling on all Corfiots to not listen to those who take advantage of our fight by misinforming and slandering our efforts.

We will continue to inform the citizens, and especially for the Garitsa and Anemomylos redevelopment project and what is planned to be carried out, highlighting the lies that have been said for quite some time.
