IOANNINA. The SDIT (Public-Private Partnership) ASA (Recycling Solid Waste) facility was named Project of the Year in an internet poll conducted between 21 and 31 December 2018.
The Epirus Region received the award for the ASA facility, which is the second such facility in operation in Greece, at the 3rd Infrastructure and Transport Conference.
The award was presented by Georgios Markopouliotis, EU Commission Representative in Greece, to TERNA Energy (construction & management), Epirus Region and the Ministry of Finance SDIT Secretariat for the organisation, funding and promotion of the project.
On behalf of the Epirus Region, Tatiana Kaloyianni said, "My presence here today is also my last public appearance as Epirus Deputy Regional Governor for Development Planning, Environment and Infrastructure.
After nine years I have come to the end of my term with award-winning work and a plus sign. From the beginning of our term we put the development and highlighting of the qualities of each Regional area at the top of our list.
There are many works - smal, medium and large scale - which were completed and are being completed. Whichever way you look at it and by whichever criteria you judge us, the result of the equation (what we are handing over compared to what we were handed) is positive.
Right from the start we wanted to approach the issue of waste management in a holistic way. We set specific targets and dedicated ourselves to achieving them with specific timelines. Following the tremendous effort we put in the Epirus Region was recognised as an innovator in the field of waste management.
Our flagship project was the construction and operation of the Epirus Urban Solid Waste Management Facility. We decided to partner with the private sector and the work was carried out as a public-private contract. The results justify our choice."
