First kidney biopsy performed at Corfu Hospital!

CORFU. The first kidney biopsy was successfully performed at the hospital on Tuesday 4 December.
The procedure was supervised by the new Director of the Artificial Kidney Unit Mr. Vakianis and the attendant kidney specialists Mr. Katsanos and Ms. Kouliasi who were appointed in the last two years.
In its press release the hospital administration says: "It is proof yet again of the hospital administration's intent to end the necessity for Corfu residents to go elsewhere for treatment. This is gradually being realised despite the difficulties created by the country's financial responsibilities due to the memorandum. The following give clear indications:
- The number of surgical operations has increased by 25% over the last year (for many of these Corfu residents would have had to travel to Ioannina in the past. It is no coincidence that there is a corresponding decrease in the number of Corfiots travelling to Ioannina hospital).
- A 15% increase in the number of chemotherapy sessions over the last year.
- An increase in the number of available beds in the Intensive Care Unit (in the past the lack of beds available led to patients and their families having to travel elsewhere).
- Other functions of the Kidney Unit weren't carried out in Corfu in the past (e.g. blood exchange).
- A 25% increase in the number of specialist medical personnel.
- New radiological equipment (bone density reading, digital mammography) has been acquired and has been operational in the hospital over the last two years.
We are thus continuing steadily to improve the services offered to Corfu residents."
