CORFU. The French multinational company Total are preparing to begin explorations and it is estimated that drilling operations will begin at the end of 2020.

The Director of the French multinational petroleum and natural gas company TOTAL E & P in Greece Nick Fretwell met with the Ionian Islands Regional Governor Theodoros Galiatsatos at his office in Alykes yesterday morning.

TOTAL E & P is one of the three companies in the consortium - with 50% (Hellenic Petroleum has 25% and the Italian company Edison International has 25%) - for exploration and hydrocarbon production in Block 2 in the Ionian Sea near Corfu.

Following his meeting with the director of the French company the Regional Governor issued a press release:

Matters of mutual interest were discussed at the meeting regarding the upcoming drilling for hydrocarbons in the region. Both sides stressed the need to protect the natural and social environment and for the necessary measures to be taken not to damage the sensitive marine ecosystem in the region or the economy of the islands (tourism, fisheries, coastal fishing).

Mr. Galiatsatos said, "We wish to remain in contact and to be active members of this common effort to protect all of the above," adding that it can also be achieved through the Regional Environmental Observatory which the Government is in the process of creating following the request of the Ionian Islands Regional Council.

Mr. Galiatsatos and Mr. Fretwell agreed on the need for cooperation and communication between the Ionian Islands Regional Administration and the multinational company so that both sides can be kept updated on any problems that may arise.

Regarding the progress of operations in Block 2, Mr. Fretwell told the Regional Governor that at the moment the existing data is being processed and this will be followed by a period of exploration. It is estimated that drilling operations will begin at the end of 2020. He said that if there are mineable deposits production will be carried out over the following 10 - 15 years.
