Old slaughterhouse to be turned into a Modern Arts Centre

CORFU. The Municipality΄s proposal has been approved and will received funds of 1.3m Euros from European programmes.
The former slaughterhouse in Mandouki, which at present is used by the Cleansing Services for the refuse trucks, is to be turned into a cultural centre by the Municipality.
The Deputy Mayor for Tourism Vassilis Kavadias said, "Apart from the development of the centre of Corfu Town, through renovation of historical buildings and the extension of outdoor areas, with 71.4m Euros funding, the proposal to convert the old Municipal slaughterhouse in Mandouki into a multi-cultural centre was approved on Friday.
The funding of 1,294,020 Euros is perhaps the highest that the Municipality has been able to obtain from European programmes.
The project will breathe new life into the area - by housing the multitude of cultural events in one cultural centre it will become an attraction both for locals and visitors given its proximity to the cruise ships at the port."
The study to convert the building was carried out by Biskou Architects and took into account all the needs of a modern cultural centre in an old industrial building.
The design includes variable (according to the needs) exhibition areas and the central area will have a multifunctional role to allow a variety of cultural events to take place. It will also have an atrium with a sales area and lounge as well as storage space.
Due to the design of the building and the outdoor area it will also be possible for the future centre to have a display area for sculptures and other collections, something lacking in Corfu at the moment.
