CORFU. Union representatives asked the Prosecutor to send a team of environmental inspectors.

Police Federation leaders who visited Corfu yesterday condemned the "third-world" work conditions at Lefkimmi.

The President of the National Federation of Police Employees (POASY) Grigoris Gerakarakos and the President of the National Federation of Police Officers (POAXIA) Ioannis Katsiamakas, accompanied by the President of the Corfu Police Officers' Union Manthos Yiannoulis and the President of the Corfu Police Employees' Union Nikos Bozikis, met with Corfu Police leaders, Deputy Regional Governor Nikoletta Pandi, Deputy Mayor Giorgos Pantelios and the Chamber of Commerce.

At all their meetings they reiterated the work problems the police were facing in Lefkimmi, the unhealthy conditions and work hours as well as the fact that there doesn't seem to be any improvement in the situation on the horizon. The Union representatives asked the Prosecutor to send a team of environmental inspectors.

Meeting with Lefkimmi residents

There was a lengthy discussion with the Lefkimmi representatives President Spyros Pandis and Treasurer Eleni Monastirioti about the explosive situation between the police and the residents of South Corfu in an effort to at least strike some kind of balance in their co-existence as long as the protests continue.

In a press conference the two union presidents pointed out that the matter of securing the protests and demonstrations was the responsibility of the Lefkimmi organizers. The POASY President said: "We stressed this issue in our discussion with Lefkimmi Cultural Society. In a democracy there are certain rules. You have every right to hold a peaceful demonstration but if there is anything unlawful then you are doing damage to what you want to achieve. The police is obliged to maintain order. If you can't safeguard and control the people, then you shouldn't be holding a demonstration."
