CORFU. The Council meeting turned into a long presentation on waste management as the Mayor outlined a road map to tackle the problem.

The plan includes repair to the damage and the subsoil at Mesorahia, Lefkimmi in order to get the licence to establish a residue landfill in September. This deadline needs to be met to fulfil the funding conditions for construction work and to avoid having to return approximately 4.4 million Euros.

It has been estimated that the facility will have a lifetime of about three-and-a-half years and during that period of time an Integrated Waste Management Unit needs to be built in the Akrokefalo landfill at Temploni and a site located for a residue landfill where there can be sanitary burial of the residue from the Unit.

Following the presentation there was a multitude of questions from councillors on all the issues concerning waste management and what has happened up to now.

Residents from Temploni and Lefkimmi attended the meeting from the start and when things got a bit heated a break was taken to allow things to cool off.
