Second oncologist for Corfu Hospital

With the appointment of this second auxiliary doctor, Corfu Hospital will have two oncologists until at least the end of 2018, when the current oncologist's contract runs out. Corfu Hospital Director Fivos Kakavitsas told Enimerosi that they intend to invite applications for the position of permanent oncologist - probably in September - and thus ensure that the chemotherapy department is permanently staffed by one permanent and one auxiliary oncologist.

This development will, for the time being, appease patients' concerns that there won't be an oncologist at Corfu Hospital and cancer patients will have to travel to Ioannina or Athens for their therapy - something that would be both difficult and expensive for them. Even though the Hospital Director has stated that there is no danger of the hospital remaining without an oncologist, it still continues to be a matter of public concern.

In January of this year the American Diaspora sent a letter to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health asking that the current doctor be retained and a permanent doctor also be appointed so that the 3,500 patients on the island don't remain without treatment.
