Grief over the death of 20-year-old British boxer in Kavos

CORFU. The death of 20-year-old boxer William Hughes was widely reported in the British press.

The 20-year-old, who was on holiday in Kavos, was found dead in his hotel room on 9th July. According to Corfu police his death is being treated as suicide as up to now there is no evidence of it being either a suspicious or natural death.

William Hughes became known as an actor at the age of eight when he played in British TV series such as The Sound of Drums, Sleeper and Doctor Who.

He then left the world of acting and turned to boxing, where he won several prizes.

As reported in the Daily Mail, the promising fighter was a protege of former world champion Enzo Maccarinelli while also studying finance at Queen Mary University in London.

Maccarinelli paid tribute to Hughes saying: "He was a lovely boy - he was a credit to his family. He was a tremendously talented kid and had everything going for him. He is going to be a great loss."

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: 'Foreign Office staff are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Corfu, and are in contact with the Greek and UK police.'

The spokesman declined to comment on the circumstances around William's death.
