CORFU. Strengthening of ties between Corfu and Venice as well as in the wider Adriatic - Ionian region.

On July 2nd at the Old Fortress there was a special event to celebrate the first year of the international network European Silk Road Which was founded by the Marco Polo System GEIE, based in Venice. The Municipality of Corfu, represented by the Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos and the Deputy Mayor fo Tourism Vassilis Kavadias, welcomed the Marco Polo System representative (Alberto Cotrona, network project manager) and the crew of the sailing boat Arina (skipper Enrico Brozzola).

The vessel is once again following the Verotour 2018 route from Venice to Crete. The director of Corfu Antiquities Inspectorate Tenia Rigakou was also present. The event began with the speakers presenting the pilot activities that have been completed in the network's first twelve months, in which Corfu played a leading role (e.g. the MedTaste project with the Corfu chef Marina Beska and the Corfu Food and Wine Festival). Following this, the meeting focussed on the future of the network, mainly regarding European collaboration.

Over the last few months the strong ties that have developed between the network partners as well as the mutual trust and respect have created strong partnerships and the head of the network, Marco Polo System GEIE, was thus able to put forward proposals on the recent European Interreg ADRION Programme call. This Programme is an important development tool in which Corfu plays a leading role as regards fortress heritage and the promotion of traditional local products.

Corfu is one of the partners in the STAYTRUE proposal along with Parnonos Development, the Italian Marche Region, Ecobnb - which specializes in sustainable tourism, and the lead partner the Slovenian University Nova Gorica. The objects of the proposal are the protection and promotion of 'authenticity' as regards architectural heritage, typical products Ionian-Adriatic cuisine.

The IGOFORT proposal aims to create a network of hubs to exploit fortress heritage through youth creativity. Corfu Antiquities Inspectorate is joint lead partner along with the city network Sustainable City. The Venice region and the Pian del Bruscolo Association of Municipalities in the Marche Region are also partners as well as important private and public bodies from Croatia, Slovenia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Serbia.

Corfu Antiquities Inspectorate is also a partner in the SCALE proposal along with MENTOR, an Athens company specializing in cultural tourism, and the Cultural Products Department of Venice Region. The main aim of this proposal is the management of cultural heritage through networking and the exchange of good practices.

"We have the opportunity and the responsibility to work closely with the cultural world and other bodies capable of initiating projects pertaining to our development," said Pietrangelo Pettenò, founder and director of  Marco Polo System. "The European Silk Road, thanks to the drive of each of the 26 international members, is proving to be powerful tool for cooperation. Our relationship with Corfu and Greece is a fundamental part of this and has led to positive results."
