CORFU.The noose is tightening around the Corfu tourist economy as not a day passes without tour operators, large and small, expressing their concern.
Just a few days ago the Municipality received a polite but tough letter from TUI Head Office which, although recognizing the great efforts the local authority is making, talks about the consequences of the negative image that is being spread everywhere because of the rubbish that has piled up throughout the island.
Information has also reached the Ministry of Tourism that Thomas Cook has expressed extreme concern.
Interest from the media has also increased - both from the specialized financial and tourism press and the general media. The combination of the great demand for holidays in Corfu with the images of the rubbish has become a nightmare. Visits from journalists to the island are being planned which, looked at objectively, will increase the negative image.
Bookings for the 2019 tourist season have already begun and the next phase is in September and October - when choices will be made based on the negative image.
