CORFU. Corfu Municipality received a document from the Regional Administration on May 18 saying that it hadn΄t provided the necessary documentation for the new regulations and so didn΄t fulfil the new conditions.

For the first time in years, there won't be a summer camp on Vidos Island this year. The island has become a place of leisure and recreation, providing holidays for children and scouts and a beauty spot with peaceful beaches for the general public. It is also a historical monument.

The prerequisites to gain a licence to operate a children's camp have become much stricter under new legislation. Corfu Municipality received a document from the Regional Administration on May 18 saying that it hadn't provided the necessary documentation for the new regulations and so didn't fulfil the new conditions (fencing, legalization of unapproved buildings, Environmental Impact Study etc.). The Municipality was unable to make the changes required by law within the time limit and so didn't receive a licence!

The responsible Deputy Mayor, Andreas Skoupouras, told Enimerosi that the Ministerial Circular with the changes in legislation was not circulated and neither was he informed in time by the Regional Administration. He accepted, however, that it was his responsibility and that the children will go to the Desyllas Summer Camp in Gouvia, which can take up to 540 children.

Andreas Skoupouras pointed out that creative recreational activities will take place on Vidos as in previous years and will operate Monday - Friday from 08:00 to 14:00 for as many children as want to take part.
