CORFU. Cancer sufferers in Corfu are invited to take part in a pilot group organized by the Corfu branch of the Greek Cancer Society along with the Surgeon΄s Association, the Corfu ΄Nikos Moras΄ Centre for Prevention of Addiction and Promotion of Psychosocial Health and the Thessaloniki University Programme to Promote Self-help.

Cancer sufferers are invited to come and share their experience and the ways in which they deal with it. There will be a maximum of 12 people in each group and the meetings will take place at the Surgeons Association.

The principles of mutual help amongst members will be followed at the group meetings (equality, self-coordination, support, confidentiality) and they will be supported by workshops to help the members understand the principles of the mutual help groups and how they operate.

Self-help or mutual help means allowing people to come to terms with their problem within a collective support framework.

Worldwide, self-help and mutual help groups have been recognized for the significant support that they give not only to the participants but also to the members of their families, promoting psychosocial health and social connectivity.
