CORFU. The Ionian Islands Police Officers Union issued a statement in which they told Mr. Galiatsatos (also for Mr. Nikolouzos΄ ears) that ΄the rubbish is your problem - not a police problem΄.

The Union's statement

Following the Ionian Islands Regional Governor's comments that the Corfu Police and the officers at Lefkimmi police station should be placed under suspension, and following the unanimous decision of our Union's board, we would like to make the following statement:

We consider that the Regional Governor's untoward remarks are spreading misinformation which is an insult to both the position of Police Chief and to the police officers in Lefkimmi. We believe that the Corfu Police Chief and the rest of the Corfu police personnel work hard every day to fight crime, to serve the public and to assist the work of the local authorities.

We would like to stress that our service is assisting the local authorities to the maximum in dealing with the major problem of solid waste management but at the same time we wish to point out that is a matter purely for the local authorities - a political problem and not a police problem.

Finally, we would like to state that we will continue to serve the public on a daily basis with quality and to offer unwavering assistance to the local authorities in order to instil the public with a sense of safety and to secure a high level of living conditions for them in their everyday life.
