ATHENS. Public hospitals are functioning with emergency staff today due to the 24-hour strike declared by the Hellenic Federation of Hospital Doctors Unions (OENGE).

There will also be a demonstration outside the Ministry of Health in Athens at 12pm to voice the Federation’s demands that no auxiliary staff lose their job and that there needs to be mass recruitment of permanent doctors.

The President of the Corfu Union of Public Health Service Doctors (EGESYK), Chrysoula Marangou, told Enimerosi that “on a local level, those doctors that so wish are participating in the strike today.”

Today elections are also being held in Corfu for the new EGESYK Board. Voting finishes at 16:30.

In its announcement, OENGE states, “We cannot deceive ourselves following the decision of the Electoral Conference task force. The only thing that is assured is payment for work done up to the publication of the decision.” It goes on to say that, “The contracts for auxiliary personnel which end on 31/12/18 are considered illegal. This means that over 1,000 doctors are in danger of losing their jobs even before the end of their contracts.”

It points out that the “sole responsibility” for the present situation lies with the government, who “if it wanted to, would abolish flexible working relations and would proceed with the mass recruitment of permanent personnel.”

“The auxiliary personnel covers only a very small part of the ‘tragic shortages’ that exist,” It concludes.
