The town that burned as the Axis crumbled
CORFU. The island’s strategic position, at the entrance to the Adriatic and facing the Italian and Albanian coasts, brought Corfu to the centre of military operations following Italy’s capitulation. On the night of 13–14 September 1943, the Luftwaffe launched a devastating incendiary bombing raid on the town.
