Seatrac for those with special needs at six Central Corfu beaches again this year

CORFU. The facilities include an autonomous sea access system, ramps, and access pathways for wheelchairs.
(Central Corfu Municipality) Six of the most popular beaches in the Municipality will once again be accessible this year to individuals with mobility difficulties or visual impairments.
With the aim of improving quality of life and ensuring equal access for all our fellow citizens and visitors, the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands is, as every year, installing the special SEATRAC accessibility facilities for people with disabilities.
The ability to access the beach and the sea enables people with disabilities to fully participate in recreational activities and enjoy, with greater autonomy, an important aspect of social life.
The facilities include an autonomous sea access system, ramps, and access pathways for wheelchairs.
These wheelchairs have never been and are not owned by the Municipality; they are rented every year from a private company. The rental contract was signed on June 16, 2025, and the company has already proceeded with the installation of the equipment.
More specifically, the installations were carried out as follows:
-
On July 1st at the beach of Ipsos
-
On July 2nd, the mechanism was installed at the beach of Paleokastritsa, and the ramp construction will be completed on Sunday, July 6th
-
On July 3rd at the NAOK beach
-
On the same day, an installation with audio guidance systems—specifically designed to assist people with visual impairments—was placed at the beach of Gouvia
-
On July 9th, SEATRAC systems will be installed at the beaches of Dassia and Gouvia
-
Meanwhile, on June 26th, the Municipal Council approved the signing of a Programmatic Agreement with the Ionian Islands Regional Authority for the installation of SEATRAC at the beach of Benitses

Delays Every Year
Every year around this time, there are understandable complaints from people with disabilities about the delay in installing SEATRAC systems on our beaches.
The responsible municipal department clarifies that this typically occurs due to delays on the part of the contractor company, which owns these facilities nationwide and operates in a near-monopoly capacity.
Last year, the SEATRAC installations were completed on July 12th, while the previous municipal administration had carried out the installations on July 18th, 2023.
Rumors suggesting that the Municipality owns many more SEATRAC units are completely unfounded.
