The annual event and General Assembly of the Chalikiopoulos Lagoon (Hylaikos Harbour) Cultural and Environmental Association took place in Corfu Port Authority event hall with great success on Saturday, May 25. The event aimed to highlight the dual identity of the area: as a wetland of European significance (Natura 2000) and as an archaeological landscape of unique historical value, centered around the ancient Hylaikos Harbour of Corfu.

During the event, the following were presented:

  • Audiovisual material on the lagoon's ecosystem and the mythical past of Paleopolis.

  • Historical and archaeological evidence regarding the role of the Hylaikos Harbour in ancient Corfu.

  • The Association’s multifaceted interventions at the institutional level (Regional Authority, Ministry of Environment and Energy, Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency – OFYPEKA, Hellenic Police, and Prosecutor’s Office), including petitions and inquiries aimed at preventing environmental crimes, land encroachments and illegal constructions, as well as restoring legality in the Katakalou–Tsaros area.

Special reference was made to:

  • The official inquiry submitted on May 16, 2025, concerning illegal activities within the Protected Traditional Landscape Zone (OTKZ),

  • A collective complaint filed by 98 families to the Prosecutor’s Office and the Hellenic Police,

  • The submission of documentation during consultations regarding Natura Zones and coastline demarcations,

  • The advocacy efforts related to flood control and the progress of the project “Tria Gefyria – Vryoni Bypass.”

As part of the event, honorary plaques were awarded to biologist Stamatis Ginis, for his scientific contribution to the study of the wetland, and to the late Aristeidis Sklavounos, founder of the Association, for his pioneering role in promoting the ancient harbour.

The Association’s work within the local community was also highlighted:

  1. Construction of a covered KTEL bus stop on the Ethniki Lefkimmis Road.

  2. The exhibition “Mythology – History – Environment of Hylaikos Harbour” at Anemomylos (2024).

  3. Production of photographic and cinematic material on Paleopolis.

  4. Naming of the street “Ancient Hylaikos Harbour.”

There was participation in the meetings of the Municipality, the Regional Authority and various Ministries. Public attendance was excellent, including institutional guests, scientists, and members of the public, including young people.

The President of the Association, Petros Lavranos, concluded with emphasis:

“Our struggle is cultural, environmental and moral. We are protecting not just the landscape, but the memory and future identity of our region.”

The event concluded with the election of the new Board of Directors, marking the continuation of the collective effort.
