CORFU. The local police officer will serve as the connecting link between the Corfu Police Department, to which they belong, and the local community of Agios Ioannis, fostering relationships of trust, understanding and cooperation between the police and citizens.

Aiming to enhance policing and the sense of security for citizens in the area of Agios Ioannis Parelion, and following approval from the Ministry of Civil Protection, the operation of a local police officer will begin operations today, Thursday, March 27. This initiative seeks to address the increasing needs of the area and fulfill a long-standing request from residents and professionals.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Local Police Department to upgrade policing in various areas of the Corfu Regional Unit. It marks the first implementation of the institution at the island level.

The local police officer will be based in a specially designated area within the Central Corfu Municipal KEP, where they will be available daily. Their work will be supported by all Services and Units of the Local Police Department.

Responsibilities of the Local Police Officer include:

  • Receiving visits at their office from citizens, associations, and organisations.

  • Recording complaints and reports from citizens regarding police-related matters and resolving their issues in cooperation with other entities.

  • Handling cases and performing preliminary investigative duties.

  • Addressing any problems they are able to resolve and, if necessary, forwarding more complex issues to the Central Police Department for specialised handling.

On the occasion of the launch of this initiative, Corfu MP Stefanos Gikas stated:

"The Local Police Officer is a new institution for our island, introduced to complement and support the policing efforts of the Hellenic Police, particularly in an area with increased criminal activity.

The Local Police Officer will serve as the connecting link between the Corfu Police Department, to which they belong, and the local community of Agios Ioannis, fostering relationships of trust, understanding, and cooperation between the police and citizens.

I would like to thank the Minister of Civil Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, and the Chief of the Hellenic Police, Lieutenant General Dimitris Mallios, for approving this request, as well as the Mayor of Central Corfu, Stefanos Poulimenos, for the facilitation provided.

I wish a good start, success, and effectiveness to this new Institution."
