Chinese students and teaching staff in Corfu
CORFU. As part of their acquaintance and familiarisation with Greek culture, which is being implemented on the initiative of the Laboratory for the Study of the Ancient World of the Department of History at the Ionian University.
Beijing - Corfu has become Corfu - Kontokali, one could say! While the Ionian University delegation returns from China today, 46 students from Sichuan University and three professors have already been on the island since Sunday, participating in a programme aimed at acquainting them with Greek culture. This initiative is being organised by the Laboratory for the Study of the Ancient World of the Department of History at the Ionian University.
The programme is the result of a collaboration between the Laboratory, directed by the Dean of the School of Humanities, Professor Athanasios Efstathiou, Sichuan University, and the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens.
The aim is to immerse the Chinese students in Greek culture and history through visits and guided tours of archaeological sites, significant monuments, and landmarks of both antiquity and modern history. This cycle concludes on January 25th, when the Chinese delegation will depart. The programme will continue with new participants—both students and professors.
The process began in the autumn of 2023, initiated by the Laboratory for the Study of the Ancient World, under the direction of Professor Efstathiou, with additional support from his associates Polyxeni Strologka and Konstantinos Stefos.
The selection of participating students was conducted through interviews held via Zoom. It is worth noting that Sichuan University is a public research university and one of China's top academic institutions, with 60,000 undergraduate and 20,000 postgraduate students.
