CORFU. "All we can do as parents is not send our children to school when it rains"

The Parents' Association of the 1st Primary School is sending out an "SOS", sounding the alarm for the safety of 150 children aged 4-12 years old, teachers and other staff.

As stated in a letter of complaint to the relevant authorities of primary education and local government, which was shared with iEidiseis, the school is located at the highest point in the town, but those inside are at risk at any moment since the lightning rod has not been functioning properly for almost 7 months.

"Last February (2024), during a heavy thunderstorm with intense lightning activity, the lightning rod operated by attracting the lightning, but it did not provide a fully controlled pathway for the lightning to the ground. As a result, 150 children aged 4-12, teachers, and staff faced light bulbs shattering over their heads, cables flying out of sockets, and devices (projectors, computers) burning out, while the OTE network suffered serious damage from the electrical charge it received. Fortunately, no one was injured, and the malfunctioning of the lightning rod only resulted in material damages," the parents of the school state.

Moreover, they say that "even though about 7 months have passed since then, to this day it has not been repaired. Thus, at our school, which is located at one of the highest points in the town and is completely exposed, there is a lightning rod that attracts lightning but does not fully conduct it to the ground."

"The paradox is that this lightning rod was installed precisely to protect Corfu Town from lightning. However, its malfunction poses an immediate danger to the lives and safety of 150 children," the parents stress, holding the responsible authorities accountable.
