Licence plate shortage puts the brakes on vehicle registrations

The shortage of licence plates remains without a solution in sight, continuing to cause delays in vehicle registrations across the country, including in the Ionian Islands.

The Ionian Islands Regional Authority, in a new announcement, stresses that the local Transport Directorates bear no responsibility for the situation, as the exclusive responsibility for the supply and distribution of licence plates lies with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. According to the Regional Transport and Communications Adviser, Michalis Diavatis, repeated institutional interventions, official memoranda and ongoing appeals to the ministry have already taken place, but the supply of plates to the relevant services has still not been restored.

The issue has also returned to Parliament, with a new question submitted by PASOK MP for Corfu, Dimitris Biangis, to the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport. The MP recalls that he had submitted a related question as early as February, without receiving a response, and is requesting a specific timetable for the supply of licence plates, explanations for the delays, data on the extent of the problem in each Regional Unit, as well as temporary measures to ensure that vehicles do not remain immobilised until a permanent solution is found.
