Syringes and other medical and laboratory waste are being illegally disposed of in the recycling system, ending up on the conveyor belts of the Recyclable Materials Sorting Centre (KDAY) and putting workers at risk.
This was pointed out by Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos during an extraordinary meeting with representatives of the Medical Association, the Cleaning Service, and the Solid Waste Management Authority (FODSA). During the meeting, it was decided to request the intervention of a prosecutor and, at the same time, to intensify inspections.
According to those participating, the illegal disposal of waste probably involves doctors and aesthetic/beauty centres that are not contracted with the hazardous waste management system, in an effort to avoid the cost of lawful disposal.
The mayor stressed that he is determined to identify those responsible and ensure accountability, while protecting the health of the public and the workers at the Recyclable Materials Sorting Centre (KDAY).
