Ionian Islands: 274 violations of crash helmet law last week - ΄Zero Tolerance for Not Wearing a Helmet΄

CORFU. 93 in Corfu - 88 in Zakynthos - 51 in Cephalonia - 42 in Kefkada.
(Ionian Islands Regional Police) Checks and awareness-raising actions continue to be carried out by Traffic Police Services, regional Police Departments, and the Road Accident Control and Prevention Teams in Corfu, Zakynthos, Cephalonia, and Lefkada, as part of the campaign "Zero Tolerance for Not Wearing a Helmet." The aim is to ensure full compliance by drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles, as well as users of Light Personal Electric Vehicles.
In the 5th week of the campaign, from July 28 to August 3, a total of 845 checks were conducted, and 274 violations for not wearing a protective helmet were recorded (93 in Corfu, 88 in Zakynthos, 51 in Cephalonia, and 42 in Lefkada).
Of these violations, 238 involved drivers (including 142 on motorcycles, 44 on quad bikes, 31 on Light Personal Electric Vehicles, 18 delivery service workers, and 3 on tricycles), as well as 36 passengers.
With the enactment of the new Highway Code, the State is sending a clear message of zero tolerance toward not wearing a helmet by tightening the penalties as follows:
-
€350 fine and suspension of the driver’s licence for 30 days for motorcycle drivers (The same penalties apply to drivers who fail to ensure the safety of their passenger).
-
€350 fine for motorcycle passengers.
-
€30 fine for drivers of Light Personal Electric Vehicles.
The campaign does not aim to impose penalties, but to change the mindset of drivers and passengers regarding the mandatory use of certified helmets, as a basic measure for protecting life.
Our Services will continue to be present on the roads every day, with a strong and consistent presence, to ensure the universal enforcement of the helmet requirement and to promote more responsible driving behaviour.
Wearing a helmet is a matter of life.
