CORFU. Due to urgent restoration works on the sewage pipeline caused by ground subsidence at the walls.

This may be an opportunity for the town—one that many have been waiting for. The suspension of heavy vehicle traffic through Mouragia, for the protection of the town walls, had been announced during the Nikolouzos mayoral term. It never happened. Now, the issue has resurfaced due to internal ground subsidence, which is ultimately choking the sewage pipeline.

The incident a few days ago, near the cafes, prompted an on-site inspection by DIADEYAK crews, who confirmed the damage, though they were unable to determine the full extent and seriousness of the erosion.

Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos requested the Municipal Civil Protection Service to cordon off the small beach (spiántza) below the walls due to the potential risk of sea water contamination—an area where residents often go swimming during the summer. This is a precautionary measure, they say, since no pollution has been observed so far, although it remains unclear whether water quality tests have actually been conducted.

DIADEYAK has already prepared a study and approved the restoration of the sewage pipeline, which, according to its general director, Giorgos Adam, will cost around €45,000.

In the coming days, traffic in that area will be suspended to allow for the repair works. It hasn't yet been clarified whether the traffic ban applies only to heavy vehicles or to all vehicles, nor how long the works and road closure will last.

This could be a prime opportunity to revisit the issue of heavy vehicle traffic within the historic centre. After all, a similar situation in the past gave then-Mayor Sarlis' administration the chance to remove the KTEL bus terminal and redirect ferry operations...
