What Regional Governor said about Corfu water supply at meeting at PM΄s Office
CORFU. The Ionian Islands Regional Authority, through programmatic agreements with the Municipalities, is undertaking the development of comprehensive studies to achieve a complete hydrological (and more) mapping of the island.
Ionian Islands Regional Governor Yiannis Trepeklis emphasised to the Ministers the urgent need to move forward with the desalination plant project in Chrysiida, which is ready in terms of study completion, as well as to initiate the upgrade of the town’s main pipeline network.
According to the Regional Governor, the initial plan for dam construction, while still on the table, may need to be reassessed in light of current conditions, taking into account both the impact of the climate crisis and the island’s increasing water supply needs.
Yiannis Trepeklis mentioned alternative options that might need to be considered by the government. He referred to the potential of transporting water from the mainland (e.g., Sayada) or from nearby Albania (Blue Eye Spring), from which over 22 million cubic metrres of water could be secured annually.
The Ministry of Environment & Energy has directed the Ionian Islands Regional Authority, through programmatic agreements with the Municipalities, to undertake the comprehensive studies that were initially assigned to the first level of Local Government, aiming for a complete hydrological—and more—mapping of the island of Corfu.
