CORFU. "The rubbish collected during the crossings remains on the ships for 2, 3, and 4 days."

Recently, crews and passengers traveling on the ferries of the Corfu-Igoumenitsa-Lefkimmi routes face an unacceptable and third-world phenomenon on a daily basis.

The rubbish collected during the crossings remains on the ships for 2, 3, and 4 days, constituting a dangerous source of infection.

This unacceptable situation exists with the knowledge of port authorities, as well as regional and municipal authorities.

Apparently, none of them have intervened so far to provide the necessary solution.

Until last Christmas, the ship's waste was transported to special bins at the port of Igoumenitsa and from there went for recycling.

Obviously, differences and contradictions between Igoumenitsa Port Organisation and the anti-pollution service have shaped this miserable current situation, which will worsen with the rise in temperature and the significant increase in passengers and vehicles during Easter Week.

Already, the stench is noticeable, and there is a risk of various rodents appearing on the ships, endangering the health of the sailors and passengers.

We demand the immediate intervention of the Ministry of Shipping, the health service, the Western Greece Regional Authority, and the port authorities to provide the appropriate solution here and now.
