CORFU. The names of the torch-bearers who will end up in Liston. The flame will remain overnight in Corfu before continuing its journey throughout Greece.

The flame of the 33rd Olympic Games, which will take place in Paris from July 26th to August 11th, will be welcomed by Corfu on April 24th.

Its arrival in Corfu will take place on the 9th day of the torch relay starting on April 16th, with the lighting ceremony in ancient Olympia, officiated by Mary Mina as the Priestess, who will deliver the flame to the first torchbearer, Corfu-born Olympian Stefanos Douskos.

The Olympic flame will travel throughout Greece until April 26th, when it will be handed over to the French organisers at an event held at the Panathenaic Stadium.

Torchbearers

There will be a torch relay in Corfu on Wednesday, April 24th, after passing through Ioannina and Igoumenitsa. The flame is expected to arrive at Corfu Port in the afternoon and from there, following a specific route to be completed by six Corfiot torchbearers, it will end up at Spianada Square (Liston) at the altar to be set up there.

The designated torchbearers are distinguished athletes who have brought significant moments of pride and joy to the island. They are the Olympic silver medallist swimmer Spyros Yianniotis; the Olympic bronze medallist rhythmic gymnast Maria Georgatou; the 2,000 metres world record holder Arsenis Tsiminos; softball athlete Ioanna Bouziou who finished 7th in the women's tournament at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens; open water swimming world champion Haris Theodosiou and paralympic-swimmer Mesimeris.

Preparations

Central Corfu Municipality is already planning the activities to accompany the event for the reception of the Olympic flame, which will also spend the night here and depart the next day for Messolonghi, the Rio-Antirio Bridge, Patras, Palamas' house, the University of Patras, and Corinth, where it will stay overnight on April 25th.

The torch relay is expected to set off from the Corfu Gymnastics Club heading for the town's central square, where the lighting ceremony of the altar will take place. Deputy Mayor of Culture, Kostas Vousolinos, told Enimerosi that the Municipality has requested the assistance of the three town Philharmonic Bands, as well as the Korakiana "Spyros Samaras," Philharmonic Band to provide musical accompaniment for the event as one body with representative participation from each, led by the four conductors.

The ceremony includes the playing of the Olympic Anthem and the National Anthems of Greece and France, addresses from the Mayor of Central Corfu and the representative of the Organising Committee "PARIS 2024," as well as a cultural programme.

The flame will remain in Corfu on the night of April 24th and will be guarded throughout the night until its departure the next day to continue its journey.

600 torchbearers and 41 municipalities

Approximately 600 torchbearers will participate in the 11-day journey across Greece, covering over 5,000 kilometres and passing through 41 municipalities before reaching the Panathenaic Stadium for the torch handover.

The selection of locations to welcome the flame in Greece was made with four main criteria: highlighting the Franco-Greek friendship through historical and cultural elements present in almost every corner of our country, covering the entire territory with torchbearers who will connect its four corners, from North to South and from East to West, highlighting our history and cultural wealth through archaeological sites that preserve the treasures of our ancient civilisation, and highlighting the iconic landscapes that constitute the beauty of our country.

Subsequently, the Olympic Flame will be transported to France aboard the yacht Belem. Torchbearers will then carry the flame to more than 400 towns before the opening ceremony of the 33rd Olympic Games on Friday, July 26.

The closing ceremony of the event will take place on Sunday, August 11, followed by the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.
