CORFU. The board of Moraitika Cultural Society publicly and unanimously condemns the homophobic nature of the Carnival King.

Following the nationwide uproar caused by the Moraitika Carnival King, the Board of Directors of the local Cultural Society announced the following:

"The board of Moraitika Cultural Society publicly and  unanimously condemns:

  1. The act of placing the effigy, known as 'carnavalaki,' during the carnival event held in Moraitika, Corfu, targeting Mr. Stefanos Kasselakis and specifically his sexual identity. It is clear that, based on the evidence (photos), the homophobic nature of this effigy is evident.

  2. The construction of the effigy in which none of the Board of Directors participated, and its placement in the square where the carnival event took place.

  3. The actions of a small group of people who acted on their own initiative and stigmatised an entire village.

  4. Any individuals who participated in and carried out this disgraceful act.

  5. Any kind of homophobic and sexist actions."
