2nd High School teachers: "The academic community can only function with democracy"

CORFU. "No one can prevent us from looking our pupils in the eyes."

(Corfu 2nd High School Teachers Association) Last Thursday, January 18, there was a sit-in at the school complex of the 1st and 2nd High Schools, in response to the bill for the privatisation of universities. In the evening, the teachers at Corfu 2nd High School learned that armed police forces intervened in the school complex for the first time in the island's history. They arrested 6 of our pupils, took them to the police station, and interrogated them for two hours without the presence of their parents. Subsequently, a case file was formed.

We do not know what the instigators of this police operation had in mind, but drawing arguments from the teachings of paedagogy and didactics, we must refer to the following:

Interventions of such nature by external entities, especially mechanisms of suppression, hinder rather than facilitate the educational work and in no way contribute to the existence of the necessary atmosphere of calmness and sobriety, which is a prerequisite for resolving issues that arise daily in the sensitive space of education.

The primary purpose of education is the cultivation of a culture of dialogue, the creation of an active, thoughtful, and democratically minded citizen. We are obliged to denounce that the reasoning and actions that led to the police intervention are far from achieving the above, and we vehemently oppose them.

No one can prevent us from looking our pupils in the eyes. The academic community can only function with democracy.
