CORFU. The draft law from the Ministry of Finance will be submitted by the end of the year.

In a draft law from the Ministry of Finance to be submitted by the end of the year, there will be a provision for the transfer of coastal zones to municipalities, including the Municipality of Central Corfu.

The amendment, which the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Yiannis Pappas, had stated before the elections would be introduced in October, when visiting Corfu in September, accompanied the island's government's MP, will not proceed.

According to information provided a few days ago by Stefanos Gikas from the General Secretariat of Public Property, Nadia Kollia, the transfer will be included in a bill from the Ministry of Finance, as part of a comprehensive regulation that will address similar issues in other municipalities.

"Ultimately, because there are other municipalities with similar problems, the transfer will be made through a comprehensive regulation in a bill from the Ministry of Finance. The plan is to submit it in November or by the end of the year. This was the information I received from Mrs. Kollia," Mr. Gikas told Enimerosi.

Utilisation of coastal zone

The issue is of particular importance to the local community. Once the coastal zone finally falls under the jurisdiction of Central Corfu Municipality, it will be able to undertake a series of initiatives and actions related to the arrangement and utilisation of the coastal zone for the benefit of residents and visitors. Additionally, NAOK, one of the oldest sports clubs in Greece, will gain a permanent home.

Igoumenitsa

In neighbouring Igoumenitsa, with the signing of the agreement for the sale of a majority stake in Igoumenitsa Port Organisation S.A. to the GRIMALDI Group, the transfer of 6,000 stremma of coastal land to the local authority has already been foreseen - something that has been a longstanding request of the local community. In practical terms, this means that the residents of Igoumenitsa will not only have a waterfront but also new open spaces for sports and entertainment.
