CORFU. The necessary measures for the population΄s protection will be decided, such as disinfection and informing citizens about hygiene measures.

A team from EODY (National Public Health Organisation), which arrived from Athens this morning after three confirmed cases of leptospirosis, two of which were fatal, went to Karousades this morning.

The team, together with members of the Ionian Islands Regional Health Department, are carrying out an inspection in the area, based on which the necessary measures for the protection of the population will be decided. These involve the necessary disinfection, informing citizens about hygiene measures, standing water management, etc.

The EODY team is visiting the area after yet another death from the same village was confirmed, even though Corfu Hospital doctors had immediately informed the National Public Health Organisation for each case, i.e. since last May, as sources told Enimerosi.

EODY then sends all infectious diseases electronically to the Regional Authority and the General Public Health Directorate must forward them to its competent department to take action. But the response came several months later.

EODY told Enimerosi that the body did not show negligence and its reaction was immediate. It was pointed out that since 2015 a plan has been developed and implemented to protect the population from rodents (e.g. placing traps, etc.). While here, the team will proceed to further investigation of the area and its people, while it will also visit the Health Centres and the Hospital. For now, however, no other suspicious cases have been detected.

Meeting at the Deputy Regional Governor's office

The EODY team met earlier with the Deputy Regional Governor Kostas Zorbas at its office, in the presence of the Corfu Hospital Director Manto Egglezopoulou, the General Public Health Director, the Head of the Health Department and the health supervisor of the Region.

Concern

People in the village are concerned. Noone knew about the cases until now, as the President of the Karousades community Giorgos Bandounos told Enimerosi. As he explained, however, every month DEYAK carries out water quality checks on the tanks.

Today a preventive disinfestation was carried out around the Karousades kindergarten, while mousetraps were placed as well.
