St. George΄s Church fire extinguished

CORFU. Approximately 70 sq.m. of the historic building΄s roof was destroyed.
Approximately 70 sq.m. of the 500 sq.m. roof of the Church of St. George in the Old Fortress was destroyed in the fire which broke out yesterday at around 15:30 probably due to being struck by lightning in the sudden thunderstorm.
The fire was difficult to put out as there weren't suitable ladders for the 15m high roof, according to Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos. Artifacts and other historical items, which were part of the Konstantinos Theotokis exhibition, were immediately removed.
Firefighters fought for over two hours and were able to prevent the fire from spreading. The damage was limited to about 1/6 of the roof.
18 firefighters and 8 vehicles took part in the operation along with four Municipal Civil Protection Service vehicles and a bucket truck.
