Skripero school pupils taking part in sustainable transportation project
CORFU. Skripero Junior High and High School is the only school in the Ionian Islands taking part in this year΄s Ecomobility campaign.
Eight Skripero 2nd year junior high school pupils are showing the way towards a more environmentally friendly way of commuting to and from their school. They are breaking away from the usual suggestions of using cycle lanes and electric buses. The project is part of their school's participation in the Ecomobility campaign organised by the Ecocity Volunteer Organisation for the Urban Environment..
In fact, the school is the only one in both Corfu and the Ionian Islands that is taking part in this year's event, with the main goal of encouraging young people to approach transportation issues in their town and encouraging them to seek solutions oriented towards "green" transportation.
The idea for their proposal came from the daily life of the school pupils, taking into account three important parameters. The valuable time that is lost on the road, especially if transportation is by bus, which means it must pass through all the villages to serve the pupils, the distances and the daily routes that every family has to make with their car.
So, the group of female pupils came up with the idea of creating an online platform where the daily routes that each parent can make will be declared, not only transporting their own child to school but also their classmates. In this way, the commute to and from school will be faster than the bus, significantly reducing the time it takes to get there, and the number of cars coming to the school will also decrease significantly.
Despite the lack of previous experience in the competition, what the participating pupils gained was the ability to put across their opinion in a detailed manner in front of an audience, while at the same time highlighting the serious transportation problem in the region of Corfu.
Their teachers, Christina Ilioudi and Kostas Kostalis, were also supportive throughout their effort. The proposal of the pupils was accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation on eco-friendly means of transportation with a historical review.
18 teams of pupils from 18 schools in 18 cities and districts of 10 regions of the country are participating in this year's Ecomobility educational programme project. The project and pupils' proposals are evaluated by a special committee, and every year the teams are presnted with awards based on criteria such as self-initiative, adolescent creativity and imagination.
