CORFU. The drain is open and the cables exposed - Kostas Zorbas: "Works have started, in a few days the problematic wiring will be repaired".
There is deep darkness, which is dangerous for drivers, at the Sidari junction for about 1000m towards Velonades, as there is continuous damage to the street lighting.
Residents told Enimerosi that they have repeatedly informed the responsible authorities and the municipal technical services about these problems. They also stated that "each time it is like they are hearing it for the first time. For two years now the lights are being fixed in May and stop working again in October".
The junction is completely dark, as shown in the photo, which makes it dangerous for residents, businesses and children who use the road daily.
Amalia Goudeli, an Enimerosi reader, said that "it is very dangerous as cars increase speed in this area and there is no visibility at night. Following great pressure, they came a month ago and they left the drain which causes the damage open with the cables exposed".
Next week
"The problem will be repaired for good next week," the Debuty Regional Governor Kostas Zorbas told Enimerosi. "We are aware of the problem, which is not due to burnt out bulbs but problematic wiring. Indeed, the crew had somewhat fixed it in the summer, but with the first rainfalls there was a short circuit again".
"We gave priority to the South Corfu network, where street lighting was non-existent, either due to burnt bulbs or cables, and we replaced the whole network up to Kavos.
We then repaired the lighting on the Eth. Paleokastritsa Rd, which is the busiest road in Corfu.
The contractor is now in North Corfu. A section in Velonades has been restored and next week the problem will be solved permanently, as it is serious and requires digging and changing of wires," promised the Deputy Regional Governor.
