CORFU. The theme for the 2023 Festival will be Opera and Gastronomy.

Members of the organising committee met at the Chamber of Commerce today to prepare for the 5th Corfu Food and Wine Festival which will take place 20-28 May, 2023.

The committee is made up of most of the island's tourist and other organisations:

- Ionian Islands Regional Union of Municipalities (PEDIN)
- Corfu Central Port Authority

- College of Tourism

The theme for the 2023 Festival will be Opera and Gastronomy. The musical culture of Corfu - "applaudito a Corfù" as was said in the past - comes together with "the diva of the kitchen - the secret cookery book of Maria Callas" in a unique culinary and musical celebration.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the greatest woman in opera, the Festival will showcase Corfu's significant contribution to music and especially opera.

The Corfu Food and Wine Festival is organised every year by the non-profit organisation Ionian Inspires and nearly all the island's groups and organisations take part.

Every year other countries are invited to participate via embassies, chambers of commerce and corresponding cultural and culinary organisations. The Festival is being held under the auspices of the Foreign and Tourism Ministry, The National Tourism Organisation with media sponsors VisitGreece.gr and the state radio and television company (ERT) and is enjoyed by locals and visitors along with Greek and foreign journalists and reporters invited by NTO.

The aim of the festival is to showcase gastronomy as a major feature in the history and culture of Corfu and the Ionian Islands - it is well known that the first written reference is the hospitality received by Odysseas on the island of the Phaeacians.

The festival is held in May so that, on the one hand, the new produce can be showcased and, on the other, visitors can be attracted during a period of low demand and thus extend the tourist season, which is part of the Ministry of Tourism's strategy for tourism 365 days a year.
