University Tourism Department holds workshop at Skripero Junior High

CORFU. Collaborative initiative between secondary education and the Ionian University.
The Ionian University Department of Tourism and Skripero Junior High and High School pupils ended the year with a workshop at the school on Tuesday 20 December on the planning and management of a sustainable tourist resort involving 3nd year high school pupils.
The initiative for the project came from school teacher Konstantinos Kostalis and Tourism Department assistant professor Sofia Karampela with the support of PhD candidate Aigli Koliotasi. Approval was given by the Head of the Department of Tourism Konstantinos Voglis.
The workshop lasted from 09:00 to 14:00 and pupils had the opportunity to work together and put forward suggestions for the planning and management of the coastal area at Erimitis in Corfu.
The pupils had prepared by studying the basic meaning of sustainability and with the aid of an interactive game simulating reality they divided into groups (residents, investors, tourism professionals, the local authority and an environmental NGO) and collected the necessary material to put forward their arguments.
The participation of the pupils was impressive - they had prepared well for their presentations with photos and videos and took an active part in all the proceedings. The youngsters showed great enthusiasm for the project and were able to learn new information and skills and most important, learnt how to cooperate and plan together. They gave positive feedback and expressed their desire to come together again at the University Tourism Department.
Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands Deputy Mayor for Tourism Panayiotis Varouchas and the special consultant on tourism Yiannis Georgotas were also present at the workshop.
