CORFU. National Meteorological Service (EMY) bulletin forecasts worsening weather conditions on Tuesday 27 September with heavy rain and thunderstorms.

According to EMY, the ‘Bogdan’ wave of severe weather, which is affecting Italy, is expected to also affect our country from early in the morning on Tuesday 27 September with heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and very strong winds.

The Civil Protection Service and Regional Services are in readiness to deal with 'Bogdan', which is about to hit the country tomorrow.

Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Kostas Zorbas announced that the nurseries, primary, secondary and high schools, as well as the special schools, will be closed on Tuesday 27 September as a precautionary measure.

In particular, the EMY bulletin forecasts worsening weather conditions on Tuesday 27 September with heavy rain and thunderstorms. The following areas will be affected:

A) Northern Ionian and Epirus (early on Tuesday morning until the afternoon)
B) Western mainland Greece and probably northwestern Peloponnese (from midday to evening).

According to the Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Kostas Zorbas, the guidelines below should be followed:

1. All relevant services should take the necessary measures according to the circulars from the Civil Protection General Secretariat and plan for emergency responses.

2. The public should be informed (via the media) in order to avoid any problems and to safeguard citizens.

3. All schools in Corfu should remain closed on Tuesday 27 September.

Advice from the Corfu Civil Protection Department for members of the public:

- Do not ignore the guidelines from the Civil Protection General Secretariat, the National Meteorological Service weather forecasts and recommendations from the local authorities (Traffic Police, Coast Guard, Fire Service etc).
- To plan their movements so as to avoid times when the weather will be at its worst and avoid non-essential movements.
- Secure any objects that may be taken by the wind or heavy downpour and possible cause damage or injury.
- Secure doors and windows.
- Avoid any activities in sea or coastal areas.
- Don't hold electrical appliances or phones as lightning may pass through the cables. Disconnect the TV from the antenna and electricity supply.
- Avoid touching water pipes (kitchen, bathroom) as they are good conductors of electricity.
- Avoid passing by large trees, signs and, in general, areas where there are light objects (e.g. pots, broken glass etc.) which can break away and fall to the ground (e.g. under a balcony).
- Keep updated on weather conditions and the state of the road network.
- Avoid areas with torrents.
- Don't park vehicles under trees etc.
- Park vehicles at the side of the road away from any trees that may fall during a downpour. Stay inside the vehicle with the hazard lights on until the downpour passes.
- Never shelter under a tall tree in an open space.
- Ensure that the drains outside the house aren't blocked and that water is flowing properly.
- Avoid working in basement areas.
- Avoid areas where there have been landslides.
