CORFU. The school΄s problems were made known to the Corfu Prosecutor.
The necessary works at Corfu 9th Primary School started at the last moment before the new school year, in order for the pupils to start their lessons on September 12th safely.
The school's problems were made known to the Corfu Prosecutor on the initiative of the former Director of Education Christos Anthis who published a document of the Teachers' Association.
The school's weaknesses and shortcomings were recorded by the Teachers' Association, in accordance with the procedure to be followed before the end of the school year. Some of these problems concern building infrastructure, safety and the cleaning of the rooms and are considered a necessity for the school to be able to open for the new school year.
In a leased building
The school operates in a leased building (Al. Panagouli 19) owned by the Catholic Archbishopric, which is responsible to carry out the necessary works. According to the School Principal Elias Vourgoutzis, the contract, which provides for all the operation conditions of the school (e.g. work that needs to be done) expired in 2013. Since then, it has not been renewed and only extensions were given.
"The school could not operate this year on the terms we had last year. The school's sewerage system collapsed and we had to do go to a neighbouring house. The school's electrical system also had problems - because of increased loads from computers and other machines, it could not cope and there was a risk of fire.
The Parents and Guardians Association informed the municipality that the school would not be able to open under this condition. Then, the municipality served extrajudicial documents to the Catholic Archbishopric. The Catholic Archbishop was surprised by the problems he saw," he said.
Work has begun
The Catholic Archbishopric started carrying out the necessary works to allow for the safe opening of the school a week ago.
"New electrical panels have been installed, the toilets are being completely renovated and new drains are being built to go into the network. The work is progressing well," he commented, noting that there was no way the school could open otherwise.
The Prosecutor was called in order to determine the potential risks that exist in the school, based on what is mentioned in the Teachers' Association's document.
In order, however, to solve the problem once and for all, it is necessary for a new contract to be signed, which will ensure all the necessary conditions for the safe operation of the school.
