€250 million for water supply, road safety and harbour projects

CORFU. The Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kostas Karamanlis, during his visit to Corfu today, announced that €250 million will be given to improve the island’s infrastructure.

Following the meeting that was held in the Region with the participation of local authorities and bodies and lasted two hours, the Minister referred to the large water supply project for Corfu Town and the entire island, the road safety projects and the improvement of the Ag. Stefanos Avliotes, Avlaki and Mathraki harbours.


 
In particular, the following infrastructure projects have been announced and are expected to be carried out immediately:
 
- €22 million for water supply project in Corfu Town
 
- €170 million to solve the water supply problem throughout the island
 
- €32 million for road safety projects to be carried out in cooperation with the Ionian Islands Region, which will be put out to tender by the end of the summer
 
- In cooperation with the Ministry of Merchant Marine and Islands Policy, the procedures for the improvement of three Corfu harbours (Agios Stefanos Avlioton, Avlaki in Othoni and Mathraki) are proceeding rapidly with a €27 million budget
 
"My presence here today marks projects of almost €250 million. I listened to all the local authorities and bodies and noted all the problems that exist - and we will not stop here. A very important first step has been taken towards a new Corfu which will be able to enter a path of sustainable development," said Mr. Karamanlis.
