CORFU. The Ionian University Museum is offering a platform to the Corfu residents and is inviting them to photograph the island’s identity.

The International Council of Museums (ICOM), in its effort to highlight the role of museums, established in 1977 the 18th of May as International Museum Day.

The theme chosen for 2022 is “The Power of Museums”. With this choice, the International Council of Museums aims to highlight the power the museums have to contribute to social change and sustainable development:

“Museums transform the world. They present the past, open our minds to new ideas and form new innovative ideas to build a better future" (ICOM, 2022).

In this context, the Ionian University Museum is offering a platform to the Corfu residents and is inviting them to photograph the island’s identity, as the latter is shown through everyday life, the habits and the signs of the past that are still around us.

The aim is for all of us to create together a new “map” of the island that will include different aspects and perceptions of its identity, as perceived by the people living in Corfu.

The themes that can inspire the creation of the mosaic of the Corfiot identity are the following:

- The past through local history

- The unique natural environment of the island with the olive trees and the diverse coastlines, combined with the key issue of sustainable development

- The present, as a witness of eternal existence in space and time, through daily life, culture and cultural heritage,

- The past and the present coexisting thanks to the continuity of traditions

These can feed the effort to capture our own 'mosaic piece' on this map of Corfu.

Through the Corfu residents’ photos, the power of the Ionian University Museum is highlighted along with the power of the residents, who will present Corfu’s identity through their own perspectives. The photos can be sent until 8 May 2022 to [email protected], along with a short comment/statement.
