I am not a doll
28 Feb 2022 / 17:51

CORFU. Six sculptures were created to send a loud message for women΄s rights.

The Ionian Islands Region is dedicating the International Women's Day (8 March), in an original and different way, to women's rights, sending a loud message through art, as a means of raising awareness among citizens.

The “@iamnotadol_project” will be in Corfu for two days (8 and 9 March) and it will be hosted at the Ionian Film Office at 34 Velissariou St.

The ambassadors

The Greek National Tourism Organisation (EOT) President and SDG5 Ambassador Angela Gerekou and conductor, musician and artistic director of the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra Yiannis Hadjiloizou are the ambassadors of this project.

Two young people, Youth Ambassadors of the project, Maria Voskopoulou and Iakovos Prekas, are introducing the project to the new generation.

These six sculptures are friendly to children but shockingly cruel for the adults who know what they are referring to. These sculptures have been created based on the United Nations human rights principles. It is an initiative of the artist Ioanna Paraskeva (Conceptual Fine Art Creator) and it is aiming at motivating mainly young people to adopt the idea of substantive equality between the sexes by eliminating all forms of discrimination, harmful practices, violence and exploitation of women and girls.

The sculptures

The six sculptures in the series “iamnotadoll_project”, are referring to six major issues women still face:
- Sexual harassment and rape (yellow shoes)
- Violence in relationships, family, work, (physical, sexual, psychological, verbal, financial) (blue shoes)
- Forced and early marriage and paedophilia (orange shoes)
- Female genital mutilation (clitoridectomy) (pink shoes)
- Trafficking of women and girls (red shoes)
- Internet abuse (green shoes)

Incentive for communication

The aim is to use the sculptures as an incentive for communication and education on issues regarding equality and fight against abuse. Basically, everyone is given the opportunity to choose which “coloured shoes” they want to “step into” and to be photographed wearing the t-shirt with the logo “@iamnotadol” and of the Ionian Islands Region and then post their photo on social media as an encouragement to eliminate all forms of gender violence and harmful practices.

The presentation of the sculptures will take place on Tuesday 8 March at 18:00. Present at the event will be the Regional Governor Rodi Kratsa and the sculptor, as well as institutional bodies, and it will be broadcast live in all Regional Units. The sculptures will be available to all citizens and, especially, the young people to visit them and take photos.
